Mark, in your latest mod in your amp, what tranformers do you have?
I have that OEI 100 watt plexi tranys are supposed to the shit. My 67 trany is on the way out, should I buy the OEI when I need to replace it?
EVH Marshall NOT modified??

It's a subtle thing really. Using a Variac would be much more pronounced way of seeing how a PT effects tone...just because you're changing the voltages supplied to the components. Things are are going react differently at certain voltages..maybe give you some sag or whatever. No audio signal goes through the PT, so there isn't necessarily a "wow" factor with a PT change. The output transformer though...that's where the magic is.

Why is it we can remember where all the wires go, but can never find a pick?

I think that the Cerrum and other early accounts of Edwards amps are correct. Those references seem to have influenced Ralle on his spec. Eddie's amp did have 3 switches in front which made it a non American export Marshall. Thanks to this Forum the "Brown" sound isnt so elusive any more. Rockstah used a 1200 series spec with a PPIMV and nailed it, as did Ralle who used a similar circuit and attenuater/load box set up. The 4/12 with 25 reissues(yes even the new ones) are also key. It seems that "Softening" the sound with the switchable PT or variac is also of signifigance. Some seem to have the amp teching down, but not the playin, but when the two meet, you can hear it. There's no secrets.

This is a '67/68 12-series:cary chilton wrote:THe first time I did that test I only score 74, I did it again to 86 then 91.7. Try it again when you can, I am sure you will score well.
My amp is got to a 12 series, for sure since it is a 1967. Where did you get a bare bones kit? How the hell did you learn to fine tweak the amp to sound so good that that other fellow said you amp sounds spot on (that poster said he saw many of Ed's amps). I think that is remarkable you could so exact!

Yours could just as well be a 10-series '67, if it indeed is a '67.
