Black backs, should I or not?

Post by cary chilton » Wed Oct 11, 2006 11:26 am

I know everyone who likes black backs, buys the 16 ohm version. My cab, however is an 8ohm cab and proving VERY tough to find any black backs at all. Do the 8 ohm black sound as good as the 16 ohm? Which blackback is the best, the rola g12m or the rola g12h, for the EVH tones?

I thought Blackbacks sre the same speaker as Greenbacks???

I own 1 straight cab loaded with 4 X '73 Greenbacks, 003 cones

and 1 slant cab loaded with 4 X '75 Blackbacks. All rated at 16 Ohm.

Personally I prefer the sound of the straight cab with the Greeny's. Most of the difference in sound is because the straights are, IMHO, better sounding.
Not a much high-in-your-ear sound like the slants. Much warmer sounding and more bottem.

Anyways; doesn't matter if you get yourself green or blackbacks as long as they are from the same period there isn't much of a difference.

For EVH get the GM-12's, 16 Ohm.

Hi Ruben,

oviously the '75 Blackbacks have 1777 cones and therefore they sound a bit different to your '73 Greenbacks with the 003 cones, IMHO.

black backs seem to be brighter and more upper midd versus the pre rola greenbacks

Thanks....but WHAT is the difference according to you?

I still think of mixing the 2 Blackbacks with 2 Greeny's in my bottem cab...

Hi Ruben,

the 1777 cones sounds a bit brighter (or one could say: harsher/stiffer) than the 003 cones to me.

Are there 1777 cones in your Blackbacks?

Have you tried a X-pattern (2xGB & 2xBB per cabinet)?

Regards

Robert

My straight cab sounded very good with 2 pre rolas on top of 2 blackbacks (1777)! I'd say try it, the worst thing that could happen is that you gain some knowledge!
