Steve Lukather's tone
If anyone has seen the 1986 video from the Japanese show/festival where Jeff Beck is playing with Carlos Santana,Steve Lukather,Simon Phillips,Buddy Miles, ect.
Jeff has his vintage reissue strat with what it looks like Fender Twins,he must have his small box plexi Marshall 50 watt hidden somewhere, his ProCo Rat and someverb/delay.He gets a multitude of tones from this set up.
When Steve jams on the tunes he has his Valley Arts humbucker/single/single strat with EMG's and Floyd Rose.At that time he seemed to be using a refrigerator size rack with a 100 watt Marshall head.
His tone is so heavily processed that it at times sounds like a pack of squealing weasels unleashed from a bag.His playing was cool, but in stark contrast to Jeff's stripped down sound and Carlos' MKI Mesa Boogie single '12 combo miked up smooth tone,I personaly have great respect for Steve Lukather, his Toto tones were unique, and you could tell it was his playing, but at this show it plain sucked. The show is great with a brilliant version of Cause we've ended as lovers by Jeff on an old esquire.
I have heard many Lukather tones over the years,he has been particularly defensive of Ed in recent interviews, stating the whole Music Man thing with Ed did not end well, and something about a recent NAMM appearance by Ed that turned into a disaster, maybe alcohol related,he would not say.Steve has always been for the song, kind of player.
He has seen and survived the LA scence so kudos to him.
If you get to see this video you will hear what I mean,it is like a LA session/Mike Landau type beer commercial type tone!Just a thought.
