What circuit is your clone modelled after? I don't notice any raspy highs in mine with the standards, but perhaps if they were in a '69 style circuit which is gainier and brighter I would hear something different. My earlier styled amps sound so fat and creamy I'm loath to try anything else right now.

Why is it we guitarists always describe good tone like it was food? Smooth, creamy, crunchy, buttery, sweet, etc.
Now back to the real topic:
Flames brings up a good point about what circuit is being used. Some would might emphasize that raspiness more than others. I don't know, but it seems to make sense.
I'll say one thing, I think that a majority of the amps built here may even sound better than the originals did. Most of them are certainly better built .I'm hearing things that sounds like great old Marshalls, but don't have the 40 years of break in. Damn incredible feat, IMO. Hats off to George, Sozo, and everyone else who have put so much effort bringing back the vintage sound.

Why is it we can remember where all the wires go, but can never find a pick?

I've got the '68 ckt with 2.7k/.68uf V1b, .022 couplers, 820/330uf V2a, 56K slope w/ 250pf, 0.1 output couplers. The Sozo std's definately have more high end than the +'s. But this is a subtle thing. If you listen to my comparison clips closely thru headphones you can hear the raspy high end on the std's, but keep in mind this is with the ppimv set at about 2. As you turn up the master the highs roll off.

I put the sozo mustards in my 18 watt ceriatone head and it was a big diff to me the sozo caps had a VERY sweet and smooth mid definition that the mallorys didn't have..
That said I use the first ed sozos in my 100w RI and that is one bitchin killer amp. I guess thére are many parts that do the equation........
