hmm interesting Richard. never knew it. hotter is brighter? hmmmBainzy wrote:Bear in mind though Mark, the hotter the coil the darker it will sound due to compression - therefore a hotter coil will negate the effects of a brighter location, evening out the sound. For the brighter '59 coil in the darker spot further away from the bridge, a reverse effect. That's my theory anyway...rockstah wrote:interesting you say that stan i was thinking maybe i would want the hotter coil to be the lugs and colder coil to be screws.bmf5150 wrote:my hybrid pickup has the custom coil on the screw side.the guy that came up with it claims its good either way,but i would think you would be better with the screw coil being the hotter wind
!
seems that would make for a not to bright pickup.
compared to the hotside towards the bridge being brighter tonaly in that particular place of the string...but perhaps its part of evh's sound this way.
hmmm
Duncan '59 pickup for EVH tone???

Hotter = darker (more compression)
but that's assuming the same wire is used, the same magnet, spec etc. the wind can probably be varied to make a pickup brighter or darker too.
'59's use 42 gauge enamel wire (at least I think they do, they should do if they're an accurate clone) but the Custom's use 43 or 44 gauge (can't remember which). The thinner wire means more can be fit around the bobbin, which increases the output and thus compression.
