The MM and DSD do sound alike? I know they share the same basic construction but was not sure they had the same tone. Btw, are you using a older DSD or newer?jnew wrote: For early VH, I'm using a Mighty Mite 1300 right now, but go back and forth with the DSD. Really not much difference.

Re: Pickup magnets
I actually have 2 DSD's. One from maybe late 90's the other one pretty old. Probably early 80's or older. If you secretly put any of the 3 in my guitar and I played them blind, I probably couldn't tell which was which. There are probably bigger differences in being either really close to the strings or backed away, then there are between the three pickups.

Re: Pickup magnets
That would make sense considering the history, and the sound clips.

A alnico 5 in the SH-5 turns into a SH-14 custom 5 http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/e ... _5_sh14_a/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;mightymike wrote:That would make sense since he used to work at MM making the MM 1300, which is a Super Distortion Clone. The SH5 is a slightly more refined sounding Super Distortion Clone. To my ears SH5 = VH2
I want to try an A5 in an SH5, and compare that to a Super Distortion with an A5. I have both Pickups. Magnets are $7.. Seems like a no brainer
More PAF sounding than the ceramic sh5.

Re: Pickup magnets
thanks for the info, i head heard clips of a old mid 70's DSD vs a newer one and could NOT tell them apart but many swear the older ones sound better? the old ones are not potted ad thats probably the difference. unwaxed pu's are said to have more "air" to the tone. But as for EVH he potted all of his pu's whether they were dsd or paf'sjnew wrote:I actually have 2 DSD's. One from maybe late 90's the other one pretty old. Probably early 80's or older. Re: Pickup magnets
The "same" is the resistance (43AWG) and nothing else - DSD: Large Ceramic mag vs small ceramic (SH-5), DSD: more output (hotter), brass, hex poles etc... and most importantly they do not sound the samejnew wrote:So it looks like the DSD and the Duncan Custom are the same.

Re: Pickup magnets
They're all good to me but I'm gonna have to revisit the Duncan Custom. Probably plenty of them on the cheap on e-bay. Or if anyone has one for trade for a DSD.

Re: Pickup magnets

Re: Pickup magnets
Got it. Yeah, want to try the Custom again. Something about ceramic magnets lately that just tell me early VH all day. Even VHII stuff sounding good w/ceramic mags.
