Thanks! Man it sounds really good. Saturated gain but with headroom and detail that usually disappears into the squish at that level of gain and sustain. You have achieved that elusive combination! :rocker:

Thanks Rob. How about you give some guitar lessons, then I'll have a legitimate reason to play the damn thing.
In all seriousness though, I think the outgoing signal could be better matched either through a better line out arrangement, or slave amp input arrangement. Also need to give a reactive load some due diligence. It may help the amp feel more like it does head to cab. More to come on these issues. 8)

Why is this clip so different, did you back the volume back on the vol1 with the 4700pf? I know Ralle has moved on from the .047uf pi input, but I still think there is something right about that. The Mighty Mite pups are the real deal, and we are seeing this now that the amp part of the equation is solid.

That sounds good...really good. Maybe just a hair more distortion, but I'll bet that would come with opening up the volume or adjusting the pickup a bit. I tend to like it on the cleaner side, but I think it is just very slightly under-distorted for the album tone to my ear, but very, very close...maybe 95% there IMHO.

A really lovely sound...one of the best clips I've heard in a very long time. As Phil pointed out, the beauty here is the lack of that over-distorted, over-squishy thing that you get with the PPIMV/Mod 5. Man I'll bet it feels really good to get that sound under your fingers!

James, did you say what you're using for the PA?

Kind of lost me on this one. Are you meaning the ISO'd clip vs. the clip with backing tracks or just in general? They are the same track but I'm sure you hear that.
The Vol. I knob is only on about 6. Vol. II was at 0 for the clip and everything else was 10'd. So with Vol. I only at 6. The 4700pF is certainly playing a big role. Any more however and it seems to get too much distortion and things sort of fall apart and move away from VH tone. The Opt Trans on this is a small, Mercury Magnetics, self lead, 045-RS so probably explains why it gets there at only about 5 or 6. Just a little guy trying to do a big man's job. Throw in the 90VAC supply, low filtering and a tube rectifier and it's just all about dragging ass, sagging, collapsing and falling on it's face. A very unique opportunity to admire the sound of failure. :stars:
I suppose I could work away from the 100K in the NFB loop as it too adds a lot of hair/gain. Still lots of things to noodle with.
As far as the PI input, I haven't tried .022 since going back to the 4 hole, NMV. I just have two .022's in parallel and haven't changed it. I'll try it at some point. 8)

PA? Are you talking about what's being used to re-amp? If so, it's the amp I used for the Jamie's Cryin clip, but re-wired for clean tube power only.

Thanks man. Yes, it is a pleasant feeling to have a clean punchy tone that solo's freely as it seems to do. Still a work in progress (always will be I suppose) but this seems to have taken a big leap for me. I was thinking that I would actually back the pickup height away just a tad and turn Vol. I up to about 7. Just to ease any hard brightness and keep similar distortion character. Like I mentioned earlier, lots of little refinements still to tamper with.

I'm wondering in a slave scenario, does one keep more compression by keeping the main amp opened up and gating it with the power amp. Or keeping the main amp lower and cranking the power amp? I'm talking about gig volumes too, not bedroom levels.

:what: Don't know how much it actually has to do with slaving. Actually feel more compression straight to cab. Though this clip was at bedroom volume, I normally play at gig volumes if not more. I like healthy volume.

dude... that is such a nice comment. thanks. friday i was cutting tile for a kitchen remodel and i cut the knuckle on my index finger of my left hand pretty good - i'm fine but when you look down and see a bloody knuckle swelling up like a golf ball - you suddenly realize what a gift your hands are! so - just saying - don't take it for granted - treasure those gifts and use 'em reeeal goot!

That amp sounds great! So glad to read here that there is a consensus. You have a good combination of components right now. You sure you don't want to just leave it alone and build a new one! ?? (just in case you were looking for an excuse)

Ouch, that's the pits. Stitches?
I know what you are saying and wholeheartedly agree. I work in a heavy handed/heavy equipment industry. Very disciplined in using impact resistant gloves at all times. My recreational passions are golf and guitars so my hands get all the safety considerations.
No major stuff to do to the amp anymore. Just some small comparison details left to try. 8)
