Slant vs. Sraight

Post by Capt Vemo » Fri May 20, 2011 11:20 pm

Ok basicly Im looking to get more info on the sound difference between the slant and straight 4X12 cabs. Does one really sound better or that much different? Im looking to get me a cab to go with a 50 watt head and want a full sized cab. Im no longer playing in bands and only planning on getting a half stack for bedroom jamming. But I want another halfstack all I got now in my little combo amp. Can anyone give me the lowdown on the two different cabs? All opinions welcome Im looking to purchase one soon and not sure what would be my best option. :help:

at bedroom volumes, you are gonna struggle to tell the difference between a straight and slant 4x12 - get a nice 1x12 cab like one of the Mesa Thiele ones which will sound much bigger in the bedroom (as we all know, size doesn't matter in the bedroom)

Throw in some diffusers in front of the speakers and either sounds better than they originally did and nearly impossible to tell them apart. You can make these yourself for $2.00 the domes come from Parts-Express.

That's supposed to be .050" thick not .50" thick.

Never thought of that guess for bedroom jammin its probably not gonna make much difference which one I go with. And for a halfstack it would probably look nicer with the slant cab. Im also getting a 50 watt head and I head the slants sound better with a 50 watt head. I dont know if theres any truth to it but looks wise the head fits the slant cab better.

both great, and interestingly, go great together!! ha!! I usually mike and listen off to the side on any cab...I like the slants, but its not critical...BTW, My brother had that Schenker poster on his wall since 1978...when he went to the Lights Out tour, chicago...they actually recorded strangers that night...WHAT A TONE AND VIBE, great vibrato and lovely note choice...

LOL yeah I used to have the poster when I was a kid along with a few of my other guitar buddies. Schenker has to be the most underated guitarist ever. He can play just about anything and his tone is amazing. His thank you CDs blew my mind when they came out. I knew he was good but wow he just never got the credit he deserved.

well you inspired me to watch live in Tokyo 1997 last nite...I think RR ripped him pretty good...and that Euro 80s metal..HE started that...period...

here's a note on point to your question...MY 1 CENT: I like slants with Super basses and straights with Lead amps...I only uses bass models, and dirt pedals...so im a slant guy... :hairband:

I like the big boxey look and deep sound of the straight Cabs. (Marshalls that is) No comment on other brands....My full stack consists of two straights.

Go with a straight as even with a head on top, you still have room for whiskey and beer bottles. This way, you don't have the risk of having to put the bottles on top of the head and spilling into the circuitry.
Cheers to the ears.

EVH swears by the straight cabs fwiw. I've always had angled cabs, but have heard the angle beams up the highs and the straight cabs, well they go straight out. :stars:

I like the angled cabs for a couple of reasons,

To me, they look better (a half stack scenario that is).

They seem to project the sound in a slightly broader way (the straights are TOTALLY directional). I like the slant, since I never play sitting down, I feel that the angle of the top two speakers are hitting me more, though I know this is probably just psychological.

Ed was said to have used a slant 4/12 on VH1, I believe.

I think early Metallica era James Hetfield must have also had that Schenker poster on his wall 8) .

I'd say that it probably wouldn't make a lot of difference in your situation. Also it seems like it wouldn't matter in a close mic'ed situation either. It might make a difference if you're on a stage where you have to stand very close to the speaker cabinet. Speaking of stages did you ever notice how it seems like most stages are designed so that any 4x12 points directly at the head of either the sound man or the club owner?

LOL +1. I like bottom cabs, they way the look and sound. AC/DC and many others use bottom cabs. I like the bottom cabs with Greenbacks, but slants seem to do well with V30.

Never had a straight 4x12, but I have a JCM800 100w head into a 4x12 angled cab plus a JCM800 2x12 cab and it sounds sweet. I find in the more recent Marshall cabs, the speakers seem slightly brittle sounding. I like the roundness sound of the older cabs.

Hey Guys!

What are the speaker "diffusers" all about?

How do they affect the guitar tone?

Thanks!
