2x12 vs 4x12 Cab

Post by RocknRoll5 » Sun Apr 03, 2011 9:04 pm

I play through a Metroamp JTM45. Currently using a 2x12 cab, 8 ohm, with a mix of Celestions: Vintage 30 and G12H.

Mainly went with the 2x12 for size and convenience in hauling my gear, but considering switching to a 4x12 for a fuller sound. It can be difficult at times hearing myself on stage. I am usually close to my amp, and having the 2x12 on the floor kind of puts the sound where it just blows past me.

Wanted to see what you guys think....I've still got a lot to learn about the gear and stage setups, I'm just 21. Figured I'd ask the pros! :)

Put your cab on a chair or something!

Try an open-back 2x12. You'll hear it MUCH better on stage if you don't mind the tonal difference. If you don't mic your cab, open-back fills out small clubs better too.

4x12 would work but it is a different sound (more low-end thump and usually "tighter" sounding). They can be a pain to haul though.

A+1, I love 2x12s more too.

You could get a road case for your head and put the whole lot on the road case, that'd look swank.

Dead on about the open back. If yours is closed back, have someone cut a couple panels for top and bottom, and give it a try, even if the panels are unfinished, you have to hear it. You'll be amazed at the ambience.

Or build a quick trunk for your cables, pedals, whatever, and put it on that. Raise it up, and open the back. You'll love it.

Thanks. I'll try raising it up, mine is an open back...

We usually mic it and run it through the PA, but all that is out front. Thinking about it, even through I do have the open back, the places we currently play I can't get real good sound reflection off the back wall. It's either open air to the back of the stage or we're in a corner, so the sound reflection doesn't come back towards me...hope that makes sense lol

I'll definently figure something out to raise it up
