very interesting about a variac varying.

i have recently started putting a meter on my variac and have come to the conclusion that the dial is simply a reference and i agree that if one wants 90v they should check with a meter to see that is in fact 90v.

i'm left wondering why they wouldn't read true to the dial.

Could it be the dial indicates a voltage ouput at a certain input voltage?

So it would ouput differently say you had 117V going in than if it was 110V?

I had a LOT of carbon buildup on my variac (where it makes contact) after using it 6-8 years with my old amps, it took pretty coarse sandpaper to get it cleaned off but it works fine once again.

I have always measured the output at the line coming out of the variac, never the actual setting on the variac itself.

Some of us discussed this topic years ago at the PP forum.
