are these metal handles from a Marshall 4x12 ???

Post by HTH » Fri Nov 26, 2010 10:00 am

I've had these handles for ages and can't remember what cab they came off, just wondering if they are the same cab handles used on the old Marshall 4x12s. Anyone????

They could be. George's 68 slant has an odd finish on his metal handles/caster cups that none of mine did. Mine all had a baked on coating/paint finish that had a slight texture to it. George's didn't. Those might be the finish like George's.

Of the 20-30 old metal handle cabs I've had, none of them had that finish.

Orange used those handles as well at some time, I think.

possibly marshall ones stripped and then painted black. the way you can tell is by looking at the bolt that runs through the chrome handle. If one end has a small black hexagonal shaped tip its from a marshall. If its got a round silver/grey coloured screw style head on it, its probably from an orange or a laney etc.

Some carlsbro cabs have very similar metal handles but they are actually a fraction thinner or larger than the marshall ones and so they are not interchangeable.

The orange & laney ones are interchangeable with the marshall ones (but if you are a nitpicker like me you will notice the little bolt is not original)

The earlier pinstripe handles with the thin sides have the hexagon head on both ends of the bolt.

can you tell better from this picture? - bolts aren't black, the nut and bolt are grey coloured.

probably from an Orange cab then?

Its the other side of the bolt I need to see. If its not a marshall I would say Orange, Laney and Carlsbro are the most likely candidates but I think quite a few cab makers will have used them. I dont know why the bolts are different on the Marshall ones, you would think they got the handles from the same supplier etc, but they just are different, at least on all the cabs Ive seen and owned.

Maybe after Marshall stopped using them in 71 the handles came supplied with different bolts and its those later handles you see regularly on the orange and laneys from later on in the 70's. So perhaps an early orange cab from late 60's might have the small black hexagonal ended bolt on it too, but Ive never seen one so dont know.

heres a couple of comparison shots to show what I mean...

These are the bolts I usually see on Marshall handles...
Image
This one is from an Orange cab, similar to others Ive seen on Laney & Carlsbro cabs...
Image

The handles are exactly the same apart from this little bolt running through the middle.

On the earlier Marshall handles with the thin sides a hexagon head is on both sides, but on the larger basketweave handles the bolt just screws into a nut on the other side.

also the Marshall bolts are usually a bit shorter and dont jut out as much as the orange/laney ones.

the bolt going through the handle on mine is like this picture - probably Orange or Laney then.

good to know - I always wondered what they were from.

ahhhhh!!!!! (light bulb goes off). I remember where I got these now, I bought some '73 cream-back G12H-30s off a guy who was putting new speakers in a 4x12 Orange cab and I asked for the handles too as he was refurbing the lot. There you go, mystery solved and confirmation that I have the memory of a gnat :palm:

problem solved.

the good news is they come out pretty easily. so if you've got cruddy looking marshall handles and some pristine orange handles, just swap those bolts over and no-one will know the difference.

the bolt heads on the marshall ones usually have the letters 'C R L' on them too.

thanks for your help guys. at least I now know what they are and are not.

I'll be selling these on down the line as it happens, got a new boiler to pay for (ours just packed in this week) so I need to let go of bits and pieces like this that are waiting for a rainy day project.
