Value of an original 4x12 basketweave with pre rolas?

This is what it sounds like, when cones cry.

Value of an original 4x12 basketweave with pre rolas?

Post by VintageCharlie » Mon Nov 22, 2010 5:58 am

Hi guys,

after calculating all the options of modern alternatives, it seems like an original basketwaeve with original pre rolas isn't that much more expensive. At least judging from an eBay auction in which an original 4x12 basketweave with pre rola G12M's went for 1500$ in US.
It could be beat up optically, but it should be in a good condition otherwise, especially the speakers themselves - including original cones, no repairs done, etc.

What is their usual price in UK (this should be the best place to buy these, right?). Could one hope for something like 1000 GBP or less? I guess shipping for such a beast within European Union (from UK to Latvia) would be around 100 GBP?

Thanks!

Regards,

VintageCharlie

I would expect that shipping a 4x12 to Latvia will be more like £150 - £200 GBP. The last time I shipped a 4x12 out of the UK was in 2001/2002 (my first ebay sale) and I recall the shipping being around £150.00

You will likely find a basketweave cab in the UK, but getting one in good condition with original speakers in good shape is where you'll have the problem. You're likely to pay upwards of £1200 GBP for such a beast, minimum, imo, ymmv etc...

Thanks for the input HTH!

Yes, i suppose 100 GBP for shipping would be very optimistic :D I guess you're right - around 200 sounds possible.

Might it be a good idea to get speakers and cab separately? In theory they should be worth less, as they wouldn't be original to each other, which decreases the value, right?

yeah in UK its usually about £1200 for one in reasonably good condition with good original speakers & wiring.

ive seen beaters go for as little as £600 but thats still a lot of money in my opinion if the speakers turn out to be knackered.

if you want my advice dont be sucked in to buying from sellers that clearly dont know what they've got. try and buy from actual players who can at least tell you if the speakers are in good order etc, you can usually suss the kind of seller out from the ad.

expect to pay less for a loaded cab than buying the speakers and cab separately. crazy but true.

I just took delivery of a late 67/early 68 slant basketweave with four 20w G12M pre rolas with 003 cones. It was $1500, I paid for the shipping of my Anvil case both ways to the seller.

Once I get over my cold I'll fire it up and offer a tone report. Right now my ears are ringing from the cold medicines I've been taking for the last couple days, so now is not a good time to listen to it objectively.

Yeah, I did the math on having him take it to somewhere to get packed, as Fedex said they didn't have the materials. By the time I got a couple of quotes it was just easier and cheaper to send my Anvil case for it. And it made it much easier on the seller, of course...drop it in, latch it down, take it to Fedex.

I wish my ears would quit ringing from the cold meds, though, so I could go try it out. Hopefully later this weekend.

nice score anyway. apart from the grill cloth i think those early basketweave cabs were made exactly the same as pinstripe cabs. it should have the slim metal handles etc. the eric collins stuff wouldnt look completely out of place...

I've got a pair of the later (wider) metal handles, so I'll check that out.

Not till I feel better, mister! It was 44 degrees out on our front porch this morning. Hell, I'm getting chilly just thinking about that!

When I do the pics (insurance) I'll post photos, inside/out, the usual.
