Heavy Duty Speakers

Post by basile865 » Sun May 30, 2010 2:37 pm

Do they make speakers as far as ceramic magnet ones, with a magnet larger than 50 oz? I want something that has big bass, and low mids, but is powerful enough to take a 100 watt plexi. Something that sounds similar to greenbacks but with a really large headroom, so theres little to no speaker distortion?

Emi Wizard has a big honkin mag, I think 56 or 58 oz. Sounds more like a G12H though, but it's got good power handling and is loud as all hell. Also, Reinhardt sells custom speakers that sound like a greenback/12H cross, have heavy (56 oz.) mags and can handle I think 60/65 W each. Good pricing too. I;ve got one and it's a wonderful speaker.

Scumback sells 100-watt versions of all the 12" speakers they sell, so you could get 2 of those and it'll hand your plexi with no problem. If that's out of your price range, Weber sells Silver Bells, which sound like Greenbacks, in 100w for $105 apiece.

This is a contradiction. Greenbacks don't sound like your first sentence. So any advice is meaningless. It either sounds like the first sentence or Greenback but it can't sound like both as they aren't even in the same ballpark. So what do you really want or do you even know?

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

As for 908, my experience is that greenbacks are a darker sounding speaker but break up too early. They have a nice thick sound, but start to crunch way early for my tastes. Yes I do know exactly the sound I want, which is exactly what I described in my question, which is similar in sound to a greenback but with more headroom. But since any advice was meaningless, why not save your arrogant remarks?

I was thinking of Zakk, even though he has a different tone than I'm going for, he uses an interesting recipe - 6550 tubes and those speakers, yet he has such a distorted tone. I guess its entirely or majorly from his pedals.

I have a marshall mode four 280 cab (MF280B) and even that starts to fart a little when I'm pushing it hard. Those are vintage 30's. So I'm looking for something with plenty of low end handeling.

Maybe celestions classic lead? Its 80 watts. I just dont want it to sound hifi or fenderish. I want it to make the strat sound jazzy. It seems it might only come with a ceramic magnet.

I wasn't being "arrogant". I was trying to get you to see you need to better describe what you want. In your case maybe you need to get some more speakers just buy them used so you can sell them for what you bought them for and you can get some experience. Maybe name a players sound you really like. I think Jim asks about a half dozen questions before he recommends a speaker.

My comments were as much directed at people so willing to give advice they really don't care if it answers what you asked for.

The EVM12L has terrific low bass capabilities but it can also be very bright. So you dial back the treble in other ways than in the speaker.

Speakers are SO very important to players who play with a style and tone that isnt 'saturated' and compressed out into that smooth gain/crunch style, like EVH for example. I mean, they are still important to those guy's too, it's just that with equal volume, and less breakup, the speaker retains more 'touch' sensitivities.

Basile has a more 'touch' sensitive style that needs lots of speaker dynamics. At loud volumes the 25's probably will get to warm and brown, without enough transient attack speed. The only other speaker I've tried that sounds similar at all to a celestion 25 (and the clones) is a vintage 30 (65 watter).

I agree with 908, to get at this speaker sound, other area's need to be addressed (like the guitar, tubes)

Like ot tube sag and warmth (pushed hard el-34's) along with hi efficiency EV speakers might combine to match the desired sound, or vice-versa, like 6550 ot's pushing some 25's fairly hard, etc.

908, my apologies. I didnt mean to come at you swinging, I guess I read it in a different light than you meant.

So far my experience has been with greenbacks, vintage 30's, g12t-75's, and scumback H55 (65 watt version).

The vintage 30's are my favorite so far, but theyre not perfect. They were stock in my mode four 280 cab which I have read that they have a different version vintage 30 which is designed to handle the low end a little better. I think the MF280 cabs were designed for kids playing death metal detuned. Its a taller than average straight 4x12.

Thing is when youve got a cranked plexi and mxr distortion III kicking its butt you can hear the speakers get flubby on certain notes actually in the upper register. Sortve a fuzzy resonance.

I played this....dare I say it....LINE 6 (cringe) vetta combo. 100 watt 2x12. That thing straight up hurt my ears - looked in back and it had special design Celestion g12h-90's. That could be something worth looking into although I dont think theyre available to the public.

Now that post tells me tons more. At first I am surprised that the Scumback H didn't do it for you but then you said V30s were getting flabby and I realized you're looking for some really tight sounds. The only thing I would suggest is a EVM12L. That speaker in my opinion can reproduce anything you throw at it. You might have to alter your settings some but I doubt that speaker will break up on you. It is also sold as the Black Label Society speaker by EV. I'd get two put them in the top holes of the Mode Four cab or any cab and leave the bottom two out. That's 400 watts worth of speakers and they are heavy. Try that if it isn't tight enough try just pluggin the holes first and if that isn't enough get two more. Estrada in I think the Atomic Punks used that detuned setup and sounded amazing. I have a cab setup like that for my SLO clone.
