Partitioned cabs...

I think I've seen a few pictures of old Fender 2X12 cabs somewhere - I think closed back - that had an internal partition separating the two speakers: in other words, when the back was on, it would effectively be two side-by-side 1X12 cabs sharing a common side. Any point or purpose to this?

Mojo had some 4x12's that had 2 sets of speakers separated like that, and they claimed it gave it a tighter, more bassy feel. Been really wanting to hear that cab since then...
