Faux White Marshall Cloth Straight cab project

Post by Scumback Speakers » Mon Feb 18, 2008 12:17 pm

I'm back at it...I had Bob Burt (bobburtcabinets.com) make me a 4x12 Marshall straight cab out of old antique pine. I've tolexed it in black Marshall levant, and now I'm going to paint up some faux Marshall white cloth to put on it.

I got the idea from my buddy 89custom (Metro member) who did this to a cab he had custom built by Swanson, so I bought some cloth from him, and got the fabric paint he recommended to use on it.

My plan is to do two cabs, one slant, one straight, with the Handwired metal handles, and gold piping around the cloth and over the top and bottom, too.

Hopefully it will turn out something similar to this one...

Pictures will be uploaded of my progress as I paint the cloth, let it dry, then iron it to make it permanent. Man, what fun!

Well, the first calamity hit already. The fabric got frayed in the washer. Sure not going to put it in the dryer now, so it's hang drying.

So much for following the paint manufacturer directions.

UmUH back to the cab/grill cloth thread, Jim The picture of the sample cab is kinda hard to see with my old eyes but is it a simulation of a pinstripe grill cabinet? it looks pretty nice, amazing that the color is painted on.

Ok, here's a bunch of pics. They're large, I didn't resize them down from 2048x1524 so you could zoom in on them if you wanted to.

Grill cloth looks terrific. Both pipings look good but the gold is my choice.

I'm thinking the white looks more traditional than the gold. The gold seems to disappear in comparison.
