Funny thing is two really great examples of tone I'm going for:

on the EJ clip the sound is 2:00-2:36, especially that note he hits on 2:29

I've heard that hendrix voodoo child version was done with a fender, and if its marshall its likely to be g12h30s. Same for the EJ clip as far as g12h30 thing. I also love band of gypsys tone which is even smoother. The thing is - one article suggested a higher wattage speaker for hendrix's 69 tour. I aslo emailed the guys at proguitarshopdemos on youtube - who I feel have good ears and experience, and it was their thoughts that hendrix was also using a higher wattage speaker - something around 80 watts they thought.

Now I dont necessarily want to open the can of worms as to what higher wattage speaker would he have access to back then that would sound good and not hifi/fendery.

I know this new info may seem different then what I've been describing I'm looking for, but in my experience all my speakers start breaking up and flubbing out, even the v30's. Although they project the best, I'm still not in love with them. Close but no cigar.

Perhaps half of my problem is that I'm using a 100 watt nmv head into a single 4x12 where as hendrix used a bunch of cabs. Although as a counter point in the eric johnson vid his dirty rhythm tone that I love is through a single 4x12........

Sorry to add more confusion to this if I did. Just trying to find something to be able to withstand a plexi for years of use and get that tone.

on the hendrix vid i posted listen to the note he hits a few times from 0:46-0:58 and then eric johnson hitting the note at 2:29. Half step difference but the tone is uncanny. So so close.

Well, I'd say you're in a perdicament there!

Plexi cleans are a special and beautiful animal unto themselves. Once you hit unity gain on your amp, your cleans truly are Plexified. Meaning beautiful slightly dirty, maybe slightly saggy, touch sensitive cleans. Sustaining cleans are really nice with the plexi.

All of that mumbo-jumbo is totally subjective, what is beautiful, what is 'slightly dirty', what is 'slightly saggy', what is 'clean'.

If your speakers never break up, then your amp head will, unless its solid state or you never turn up past 3 or 4 ... I think.

I'd get Scumback 100w H75s or the 100w M75s and hit the highway if I were you.

Yeah I had the H55's and sold them, wasn't really impressed with them.

Its funny because the tone I'm going for really doesnt seem all that complicated to get but really nailing it is going to take a special speaker for sure.

When I said 15's I meant JBL D-120s. Which I know AREN'T 15's, but heading in that direction.

JBLs, H30s or Greenbacks... same for Hendrix too, I imagine.

Looks like JBLs, or some of those Eminence Patriot dealies, not sure which one. I tried their Red Fang Alnico, and it was all that, but not my thang ...

What head are you using? Line 6? Or a Plexi? What tubes? Still not clear.

Also, no harm intended, but the MXR Distortion might be clouding, as opposed to helping things. Take it, or anything else, out of the chain first. Then you can hear what you're really hearing. It might clean up some.

my general tone is made up of my strat with custom shop 69's, a super lead plexi reissue with winged C EL34's selected for high headroom, through a marshall mf280 straight cab loaded with v30s. and the mxr distortion III pro.

Thing is when I get to those high volumes its not exactly where I want it.

The tone clips I was referring to is just the amp and guitar with no pedal making any overdrive. I realize the distortion III probably isnt helping but in order to get the sustain happening I need that. My plexi is actually pretty clean compared to others I've played through. The newer transformers seem to be bolder and cleaner.

I played a 68 bassman through a 1x15 cab today. I didn't get to really crank it, and the speaker was a fender 15", not sure what from - I was told it was from the early 90's.

That was the fattest tone I think I've ever got! I was plugged into the Bass channel with the deep switch on, and that tone was something else. From the first 10 seconds I was seriously impressed. It had TAD 6L6's.

Unfortunately I didn't get to hear it at much over 3 or 4 on the volume knob. I dont know if the tone was largely due to the 68 bassman or the 15" speaker. Fattest clean I've ever heard my strat do though.

Check out some '80s Rola G12-80s with 444 cones. I have a few cabs loaded with them, and when I run my Super Basses into them, they handle them full tilt without much speaker breakup (if any - I'm sure the heads are distorting long before the speakers are), and they have a ton of bottom end without being flabby.

How about newer Jensen speakers? MOD 12-70 or even Neo 12-100?

I'm after same kind of tone that basile865 was describing here and I've been thinking of trying Mod 12-70 in a 4x12 basketweave cab. I've read that the Mod 12 70w sounds similar to a V30 and/or G12H but gotta try it myself to hear if I like them.

I use old stock Marshall Super Bass amps into one basketweave 4x12 cab and the pre-rola 25w greenbacks (T1221/T1511) have to move out since I no longer use an attenuator and the master volume is gone too so I need heavy duty speakers to safely run them at decent volumes. We got two SB halfstacks here and the other cab that my bro uses is getting fitted with Scumback M55/M75 65w speakers.

I know that the Neo 100w speakers are going into our Music Man 212HD-130 amp 'cause that combo is heavy heavy and Neo's are light.

The Eminence Swamp Thang sounds like your description. It's a 150 watts with big, tight bass, neutral mids and smooth highs. It definitely needs to break in before it sounds great. It sounds stiff out of the box. My other suggestion is Scumback M75 LHDC 100 watt. I have a pair of these and they sound amazing with any amp I run through it. Might have a little more mids than you're looking for but highs are smooth and bass is much better than a G12M IMO. I think the Swamp Thang is more in line with what you're looking for though and they're pretty cheap at about $85 each. Good luck.

Dude, you may want to step that SuperLead into SuperBass specs, change a couple/few caps, and get some 6550s or I dunno KT77s? Did you bring the MXR Dist+ to that Fender? I think that may keep things on the high end for you too.

i have a 4x15 with blackbacks G15m and they are by far my favourite celestion for playing guitar or bass through. another suggestion if you can find it is goodmans speakers
