Speaker advice for a 2x12 - EVM12L + what?

Post by allman » Sun Jun 16, 2013 4:24 am

Hi

I just got my hands on an empty old marshall 1966A 2x12, and looking for advice on speakers. I would like to load this one to handle a 100w head, looking for a big, solid and even tone that works from clean up to 80's hairmetal gain.

What do you guys think about a mix of one EVM12L and another slightly less efficient speaker in the 98-99 dB range like a Scumback H75LHDC or J75 100W, or something similar to get a hint of crunchy mids, and keep the volume down?
I know Mesa paired EV12l's and MC90 (G1280) in their cabs back in the day, but I've never heard one of these.

Another alternative could perhaps be all Scumback, with H55 and H75LHDC. or should I go all inn with 2 EVM12l's?

Please share your thoughts
Thanks

EVM12L is a very loud speaker and you won't hear anything else mixed with it. Plus it is very heavy. I'd put it in and leave the other speaker out leaving the hole open. Set the cab on end with the open end down. The EV will handle the 100 watts all by itself. Actually if you combine it with say a 25 watt speaker the cab will only handle 50 watts max.
