Help with date and value of a retolexed Marshall cab

Post by bill bokey » Wed Jul 13, 2011 10:55 am

Hi !

I'm looking at buying this cab (without the speakers):

When do you think it was made ? It looks very much like my '68/69 1960.
But I have no idea how much an empty retolexed 1960 is worth (I have only ever bought old loaded cabs).

Thanks for your help !

Bill

Based on the build characteristics I see in that one pic (got any more?), that's late 67-mid 68 slant cab. That's due to the plywood strip holding in the baffle board at the bottom, which looks like my 68 slant cab.

Tough to give you a value on it since I can't see the tolex/cloth condition...but guessing around $6-900 depending on condition.

Too bad you can't grab those top two pre rola Celestions in there...were they sold already?

Thanks Jim !

Here's the only other pic I have :

I don't need the speakers as this cab would replace my 1960AHW which is loaded with 2 x T1511 and 2 x Fane but they are not for sale anyway. The ones for sale are blackback G12H, I guess the pic was taken a while ago.

I have a cab that also has this plywood strip at the bottom so I assumed it was a '68 cab but the seller claims it is '67. That's not a problem anyway as I know all these cabs sound great. I am more concerned about the price, I just don't want to pay too much for it.

I saw the other pic...jeezus...I hate it when old cabs are restored improperly.

What I see in the pic of the front.

1) Wrong tolex, looks like elephant from the pics, not the smooth levant.
2) Piping channels over the top and bottom missing, probably covered by the tolex.
3) Grill cloth installed wrong. Threads run sideways, not up and down. Going to look different next to your other cab, sorry.

At this point, I'd be walking away, but if you really want it regardless, the most I'd offer is $400 USD MAX.

Hate to be so brutally honest with you, but as you may know, I've restored a good 40-50 of these and have owned over 70 (still got about 11-12 of them), so I know when it's done right.

It's your call on what you'd like to do. Good luck.

yeah its definitely a restoration project cab. needs a complete overhaul to look correct. you could get yourself a nice pinstripe cab out of it but it would be a lot of work and would be expensive. consider that into the cost of what you want to pay for it. retolexing a cab is not something you will get perfectly right first time around and is not easy to do either. Im restoring some old Marshall cabs myself at the moment, so speaking from some experience.

Thank you guys !
The asking price is 400€ and I thought it was a fair deal as I'm after a good sounding cab. But I clearly didn't pay enough attention to details, I guess it's due to the lack of experience.
So thank you for being so "brutally honest". I won't buy this cab but I was looking for a straight 1960 anyway when I found it.

Here's the one I was looking at before I found the unloaded one :

I don't like the look of those 70's checkerboard cabs but I love T1511s. So how much do you think this is worth ? And are earl 70's "Rola" T1511s as good as late 60's "Pre-Rola" T1511s ?
Seller claims they have 103/14 cones.

that 72 B cab is a LOT nicer than the 67. snap it up! very nice imo. personally i would take the metal corners off it, but apart from that it looks all original to me. original unmolested wiring is a rare find thesedays, and the levant looks in very nice condition for a cab that age. 102/14 cone would be right for 72. im sure you will grow to love the checkerboard. killer cab.

ive seen those cabs go for about 550 GBP in UK, probably worth even more in the US. the pulsonic cone speakers are quite valuable and the cab itself is vintage enough to have some collector appeal.

Thanks Baron but I missed the cab, it was already sold when I phoned. It went for 600€ which is more thant I was willing to pay as it was about 8 hours' drive away.
I hope I find another decent straight cab and I guee I will have to "upgrade" my 1960AHW with a bigger soundpost amongst others...
