Speaker Options for 2x12 in the UK

Hi All,

Looking into speakers for my Marshall 1936 cab. Just recently downsized my rig from a 4x12 (which I'm keeping for rainy days )

Probably gonna go for a pair of used V30's as that'll be a 120w cab, able to handle both my Marshall JMP's and my Peavey JSX Head (My main gigging head).

Really want Scumback M75's but with VAT, Import Duty, Shipping, it's not viable.

Also very interested in the Warehouse (WGS) Retro 30 speakers (75w) but again, $236 shipped + Import Duty and VAT.

Also considering looking for a pair of 70's/80's G12-65s.

Before I go for the v30 option, any other suggestions for speakers in the UK? Is there a good Speaker manufacturer in the EU (where import duty won't be incurred)?

Tayden Speakers in the UK look very cool. Friend of mine is picking up a quad of Brit 60's. At £60 a speaker that ain't bad, but never heard / read any reviews of these speakers.

I play 70's - 80's Classic Rock / Hard Rock Covers.

The $236 Warehouse, even with the extra charges I think will be tough to beat pricewise either way. I have a 4/12 with 4 of the Greenback clones they make. Pretty good speaker for the money. I got them back when they were $45 each. Thought I would just use them until I found something better/cheap, but I still have them in there. Dont let the price fool you, they are pretty good.
I would think there would be loads of old Celestians kicking around the U.K?

Hi There. I think UK IMport Duty is around 9%, but if you go to the European Customs Website and specify exactly which type of goods they are (and declare this on a customs form when sending) then it looks like Speakers fit the bill for:

SECTION XVI MACHINERY AND MECHANICAL APPLIANCES; ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT; PARTS THEREOF; SOUND RECORDERS AND REPRODUCERS, TELEVISION IMAGE AND SOUND RECORDERS AND REPRODUCERS, AND PARTS AND ACCESSORIES OF SUCH ARTICLES

Good under this heading seem to only attract a 3.00% Import Duty. If that's correct, then you have to add the current rate of UK VAT to the final amount, which is currently 20%

Why not go the used route? pulsonic cones, crazy prices here in the UK

There really is no substitute for the warm sound of a late 60's early 70's G12 imo. Use a power brake and get two 30watters one bass cone (014) and one lead (003).

Out of all the old pulsonics I've picked up over the years, my best sounding 2 are 1970's 12m's that I got off fleabay two years ago for £52 for both it was a crappy pic but you got just make out the black tabs on the terminals and she was selling them for her dad!!! Recently I've seen some good pairs go for about £200.

For your power handling and with local purchase (non tax) I would get a pair of good G12 65's, pair on ebay UK now that I do not need to buy but BIN of £80 for the pair and I am weakening

Huh, well, that's not as bad as Germany and France (30% from what I'm told) get for customs/VAT/etc. Thanks for the info, I'll make a note of it for future clients from the UK who need to know.

And it's done! Cheers Neil. That auction was confusing, it was listed as "Quantity 1" but described as a pair in the description, which I missed.

£95 delivered and I figure that if I don't like 'em, I should be able to get my money back. That's not a bad price at all to kit out a 2x12.

I'll post back with my thoughts once they are here and given a good beating.

Well, well, well, these are pretty sweet speakers!

Just spent an hour on them with my Peavey JSX, dialling in various tones from 'Just Break up' to flat out overdrive and I have to say these are really balanced and warm speakers and I'm very pleased with them. Flipping between my 4x12 with G12C and the G12-65's, it's night and day. The G12C's are brash and fizzy in comparison, especially under higher gain. And actually, the G12-65 in the 2x12 is generating much more bottom end than the 4x12!

The G12-65 I would describe as "Warm" and "Smooth". They do roll off the high end and 'sweeten' any high treble. The downside of this is that they are quite "Dark" so I've had to dial in a fair bit of treble to compensate. There's a lovely full midrange to these speakers, great for rhythm work.

The only thing that the G12C's did better was a clean sound (I really don't play clean much!), Even with the amp treble on full the G12-65's don't want to give you that snappy, bright Hendrix clean thing as much. Some of this is the amp though as the Peavey JSX clean is voiced quite dark already.

Definitely keepers and in fact I'll be keeping an eye out for a quad of these in future to replace my G12C speakers.

I'm holding final judgment until I hear them in a band mix, I want to make sure they cut through ok as they definitely are on the 'darker' side of the tone spectrum. Think these will do a great job with my JMP heads, which are both much much brighter amps than the Peavey.
