Celestion speaker question.

Post by Capt Vemo » Fri Feb 11, 2011 7:41 pm

Ok I have a speaker question for you fine folks. I have always been a fan of the celestion G12H-30 70th anniversary speakers. They got a great sound with the old tube amps. I currently have one of the AVT 50 combo amps and its a valvesate amp. Ive played it through a 4X12 cab and it sounded great but they were 75 watt speakers and I like the older classic sound of the 30 watt speakers. I want to by a 4X12 cab for this amp has anyone here played a valvestate amp through those speakers and if so how did it sound? I would like to try different cabs out with different speaker combos before jumping into this. But if I cant I would like to find out if some of you may have some experience with this?

I have played through various cabs and heads over the last few yrs (I never got over the Marshall JCM 800 series, everything since then has missed the mark. The 800 series made it EASY to go into a store and plug in and get THE sound.) I would recommend getting a 4/12 loaded with the 25 watt celestion greenbacks. The 50 watt AVM head should really warm up and get browner when running it through some greenbacks. Michael Schenker used the greenbacks and still does I think.

Get in touch with scumback (Jim). He can hook you up.

Anyone else got any opinions on what speakers would sound the best with the Marshall AVT 50 amp? Im starting to think the vintage 30s which are actually 60watts. Im trying to get a classic 70s sound using this valvesate amp which it does. But its more modern technology so Im not shure I need the 25 or 30 watt speakers that start to break up sooner like with the old plexis. I know I dont want the 75 watters my bud has me convinced the G12H30s 70th anniversary speakers are the way to go to get that sound we loved but he also said that being I dont have one of the older marshalls I may want to go with the vintage 30s since there abit more versatile and may work better with this amp and not only get the old UFO and KISS tones but bands like Judas Priest and Sabbath too.

I would only try either the 25's or the TRUE '30's (not the 65 watt 'Vintage' ''30's). I agree that you should be able to 'coax' lots of tone out a few different speakers, but keep this in mind, all the bands you mentioned had the 25 (or 30) watt speakers.

Even considering the 50 or 100 watt Marshall tops that the players used, the 25's sounded better.

The 25's were 'discontinued' in '78 I believe. By the early to mid '80's alot of these player's went to the 60 watt replacements. The Tops were the same, BUT, the tone sure wasnt.

Only the dudes who really cared continued to use the '25 watters. The others started to sound shitty.
