Click here: same thing but with the solo a bit louder.

My experience between the higher and lower wattage Scumbacks is pretty much what Jim described on his website: the higher wattage speakers exhibits a tiny bit more bass response and a less treble response compared to the lower wattage. Side by side, the difference is quite apparent (the lower wattage speakers sounds more open or brighter) but otherwise, it's the same character in sound and response.

I just missed getting a YBA-1 on craigslist for $200. They usually are close to the $500 range.

Mayrand is right. When you have a 65w next to a 25/30w speaker, the lower power speaker reacts a bit differently due to the power it's getting vs the power the 65w is getting. What I mean by that is this: The dynamic range of speakers is usually best between 35-85% of their rated power, with a maximum, IMO, of 90-95%.

How that pencils out is simple.

You put an 18w amp into a 30w speaker, hit it with an OD pedal with the amp volume on 6-8 and you're going to wind up somewhere in the 22-27w output range.

At this level, the 30w is going to sound more dynamic, open, breathe better and more juicy because it's working in it's best dynamic range.

The same 22-27w in a 65w speaker just isn't exercising the speakers components as well, so it's not going to sound as dynamic.

Of course, if you flip that wattage level, and run your Metro 50 (volume at 6-8) into a 30w and 65w side by side, the 30w is going to sound great...right up until it cooks and fails, while the 65w is going to be breathing/responding just fine.

An important part of the tone of your amp/speaker/rig is what volume/wattage level you play at. If you play your 100w amp into an attenuator down to bedroom/mouse fart levels, you should get a low power speaker ONLY TO USE AT HOME AT THOSE LEVELS.

If you play out, then you need a higher wattage speaker to handle the increased power, and get that speaker working in it's dynamic range. Basically that means you should have a low power setup and a higher power setup for when you play out.

I generally find that having twice the speaker power handling of your amp's clean power rating is best.

Rough guidelines are as follows for playing at 5-10 on your volume knob:

18w amp=30w speaker (minimum)
30-35 watt amp = 60w speaker (whether it's one 65w speaker or two 25/30w models).
50w amp= 100w speaker (one 100w, two 65w, or four 25/30w speakers)
100w amp= 2 65w (minimum, prefer two 100w models) or four 65w speakers
200w amp= 4 100w speakers

I concur. A tad more bass and I wouldn't say less treble, but silkier/smoother/easier to listen to. Since I discovered the Scumbacks 2 years ago I've experimented and found that the M75 series (I use the 12" 100 watt version) is without a doubt the finest sounding speaker made today.

I even put a 10" Scumback in a little Cube amp, and it's amazing. It actually makes that crappy sounding little amp sound decent!

I've used practically every speaker under the sun, and up until now I preferred the Eminence Cannabis Rex or Tone Tubby's.

Not any longer. I have Scum's in all my cabinets and combo amps.

It's amazing also. I get guys that tell me how great the tone is, and it doesn't matter which guitar I'm playing, Gibson, Fender, PRS, etc. they say they've got the same basic setup and it doesn't sound anything like mine.

Buy a Scumback I tell 'em.
