Tips on installing cabinet string.

Can anyone help a brother out with some tips on installing cabinet string. I am recovering an old Marshall cab and want to do it right!

Pretty simple. You already have the piping channels there, so you need about 18 inches of the gold piping. Staple it on the underside of the back lip of the cabinet, and hammer it flat, make sure it's secure/tight (pull on it). The guide it over the back lip, into the channel, and pull it tight around the front lip and up into the area where the baffle board screws go in (preferably up in the corner as far as possible), then staple it again. Done.

Depending on the era of the cab, Marshall sometimes pulled them straight back, or to the corners, don't ask me why they varied, but I've seen them both ways on my old cabs.

fwiw Marshall call it beading or bead piping, not string.

Do I cut the tolex at the channel or do I put it over the tolex? :what:

The name depends on what the amp company calls it, I guess.

You're a little closer to the source, you know. I know what it's supposed to be called, but since the OP called it string, I didn't want to change his terminology and have him go "Huh?" at my post. But you are entirely correct, as my linked description & pics show.

Cut the tolex along the inside of the channel, & be sure to leave enough tolex to go down into the channel, and at least to the middle of the bottom of the channel, or you may run the risk of having the birch show through after the """string"""welt""""piping or whatever the hell those guys are calling it lol...these days is installed. In other words, don't cut it too short. You should press the tolex into the channel beforehand.
