Jim @ Scumback Speakers

Post by kdmay » Sat Jan 29, 2011 10:50 pm

I was in LA on business for a few days and had one spare night. I decided to go up and see Jim at Scumback Speakers to collect a recone kit for my H75 that blew. (Axeman, sorry I just ran out of time to take you up on your offer, perhaps next time).

The intention was to try out a few of his speakers in his newly finished demo room. Well, I think I was kidding myself if I thought I would walk out with just a recone kit…..!

4 hours later, sore ears, many cocktails and a gut full of lasagne from his lovely partner in crime Shelley and I was truly amazed at the hospitality and kindness I received.

Jim is an awesome guy, has chops I could sit and listen to for days, and really made a weary traveller feel very welcome.
We played numerous amps (Metro 50w, Trainwreck clone, Komet Concorde clone), but the highlight for me was definitely Jim’s 71 Superlead plugged into 1 M75 cab and 1 H75 cab. Absolutely incredible. Oh, and holding each of Jim’s amazing guitar collection (so much vintage Gibson goodness).

As soon as I get home and can post some shots, I will show you why my jaw dropped as son as I walked in the door to his demo room.

Suffice to say, I walked out with not just the recone kit, but 2 x M75s and 1 x H75s to create a tone monster M75/H75 cross pattern cab. Sitting here in the airport lounge, not one cent spent on excess baggage to get these puppies home, I am not sure what I am looking forward to most: seeing my wife and 2 boys for the first time in 2 weeks, or wiring up the speakers and spanking the first open D chord.

I didn’t really say that, did I?! Shhhh……

Thanks again Jim for an unforgettable night! I am already trying to engineer another LA business trip so I can bring back 2 x J75s!!

Kurt won't see this post as he's still in the air to Australia, but sir, you are welcome! Glad to hear we got that box packed within the luggage limits, too!

Now let's just pray the baggage handlers don't make it through four inches of newspaper and cardboard.

Hey Jim

Well you'll be glad to hear that the speakers made it safe!

Now I need to find some time to fit them and get down to the studio to have a good listen, although it will be only 2 to begin with as I wait for the H75 to be reconed.

Can't wait! Will keep you posted.

Cheers
