loud warm mid rangy speaker, weber? southbay?

Post by Doug H » Mon Jun 14, 2010 12:25 am

I've got a gibson skylark, it's got a pair of 6aqbs or somethin glike that, about 12 watts I think. I'd like to upgrade the speaker in it.

I'm looking for two things, more midrange and more volume. the amp doesn't quite cut it jamming with a full kit so I'd like to see if I can get a bit more volume out of it.

The response is kind of scooped, it's got a nig bottom and shrill top end. I'd like a speaker that puts out more mid range.

I'd be going with an earlier breakup speaker given the option as well to get a little more crunch out if it.

I'm leaning towards a weber alnico, probably from the American line.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I'd get a 15 watt Weber Silver Bell or Blue Dog, probably the Blue Dog. It's kind of like a Blue Alnico Celestion, which comes to mind when you're asking for more mids and volume, at least for me.

I would definitely second the Weber, but if you want a LOT of mids, I'd have to say silver over the blue. I've got about 3 or 4 of each here, ceramics and alnicos, and honestly the silvers are just way too middy for me. The blues seem to have a lot more top end and less mids. The silvers are quite loud, thick and aggressive.

Another speaker very like the silver is the Eminence Private Jack. Has a little more top than the Weber silver but still mostly mids.

The Skylark is a 5 watt amp. It used to be the GA-5 Les Paul, then became the Skylark in 1957. One 6v6, one 12AX7, one 5Y3 rectifier tube. There's a bunch of info and a schematic for it online. Great Swedish site here: http://hem.passagen.se/ekabjan/GibsonAmps.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Click on two tone years for yours.

Pretty sure they came with a 10" speaker, but it could have been an 8" depending on the year yours was made. What size speaker do you need? In most cases I'd recommend an Alnico speaker for that amp.

Naw, mine's a crestline, 4 or 5 tubes, double ended with the 6aqb or whatever they are called, 6v6 yobger brother, 4 or 5 watts each I think, sec...

mine is figure 5, killer little amp everyone that plays it loves it. But I'd like a little more balance and volume out of the speaker, a little more crunch wouldn't hurt either :)

this description caught my eye for the 10A125-O
For late 50's, early 60's amps using AlNiCo 10's where earlier breakup with lots of punch is desired.
10", 11oz AlNiCo plug magnet, 20 or 30 watts, 1-1/4" voice coil, straight cone
Warm, crunchy, early breakup, aggressive, loud, compressed at high volume. Avaialable with standard flat dome fiber dustcap or H screen dome
