100 watt into cab

Post by griffid » Sat May 22, 2010 12:19 pm

While I'm already posting, figured I'd ask...I have a 100watt Metro with a master volume. I have an Avatar 2x12 cab with a V30 and a G12H30. If I remember correctly, the cab is rated for 60 watts. My "dumb" question is, if I'm using a Hot Plate and the master volume, does that reduce the wattage the amp is running at? Don't really know bout these things...don't want to blow up any speakers. I'll admit I've played the Metro thru this cab and it sounded great! But figured I'd better ask before I blow anything up. I'm aware I should have more wattage in the speakers to play the Metro thru it, but my 4x12 has the 75watters in it, for one thing, and of course its huge.

I believe that an attenuator won't reduce the wattage your amp is running at but it will reduce the wattage your speakers are getting. I don't see any reason why you shouldn't use the 4 x 12 cabinet. I doubt that you will blow speakers in the 2 x 12 cabinet but its not impossible if you crank the amp up enough. The fact that you are using an attenuator makes me believe that you probably will never blow them because you aren't playing that loud. I could be wrong though so do not consider this professional advice.

be wary of this but you can also in some power resistors to sort out the power rating, i managed to blow a 100 watt 2x12 playing a cranked superbass i blew 1 of the speakers with no attenuation.
