Man I picked up a cheap little DS-1 around x-mas and I am really digging the little orange box!!!
Running it like a booster (tone @ 11 o'clock, level dimed and dist. on zero) I'm getting some nice 70s to early 80s era Ted/ACDC sounds using just my LP thru an old Fender PA100 and a cheap Avatar 212.
Took it to practice the other night, backed off the gain on my crunch channel (H&K Tube 50) and got very good results with it there as well.....
I'm going to order a mod kit and try all the popular mods on it. I'm also gonna do some mods to my crappy TS-5 as well (never been much of a Tube Screamer fan, maybe the restored bass mods will change my mind).
I'm Definitely digging the DS-1 like it is, and it's no biggie to undue the mods if I don't like it anyway. I can't wait to hear what it sounds like with the mods!!!!
Best $40 Dist. box I ever bought!!!!
DS-1

I like my DS-1 also. I use it like this: Guitar-->TS-808 re-issue set as a clean boost)-->DS-1 (also set as a clean boost, for solos)-->Marshall 1959 re-issue, turned up loud. The Tube Screamer re-issue sounds great, gives me a crisp, upper-mid-heavy rhythm crunch that's real tight in the lows, very in-your-face and bright. I like that. I figure the lows belong to the bass player. I switch the DS-1 on for solos, and it puts lows back into the signal, although it doesn't get muddy, just makes the tone more "vocal" sounding, and gives more sustain. The DS-1 is a great pedal, especially for the money. I think I paid 35 or 40 bucks for mine brand new.
I knew we should've taken that left turn at Albuquerque!
