True-Bypass Delay Pedal

Post by Country Boy Shane » Thu Sep 15, 2005 1:57 pm

Anyone know who makes a true-bypass delay pedal besides Fulltone?? If not, what would you say is the best for a '69 plexi without being to noisy and having great tone that i could easily mod into true-bypass. If you have an idea, please say you have experience with the true-bypass mod so you could possibly guide me.

Fulltone's is $1000, which is the Tube Tape Echo unit!!! NOT A NICE PRICE :(

Shane,

Why don't you just get a True Bypass Looper? Loooper.com has them. I like their idea and am in the process of building my own with 8 loops, a master bypass and a tuner jack. I have a bunch of MXR pedals (not true bypass) and if I run them through the looper I can individually take/put whatever one I want in/out of the loop.

Just a thought,

Roger

The Maxon AD999 sounds great (900 ms of analog bliss!) and is true bypass. Also, Electro Harmonix have been making their pedals true bypass since 2003. You could try a Deluxe Memory Man, another great analog delay pedal (600 ms).

i don't think you can compare pedals to tape delays...they are two differant animals. if you have a tech go for the tape unit....if you have a pedal board go for a pedal. somebody also mentioned the echozcar *spelling* on here...it looked fancy and good but i have ot heard it.

I second the the maxon ad999 idea. I have a deluxe memory but I'm not sure I believe all the people that say elektro harmonix builds all their pedals true bypass. I haven't opened any of them up to confirm but some of them suck a lot of tone when bypassed (I have a big muff, holy grail, memory man, and doctor q). The memory man really isn't that bad though. The maxon will set you back more $wise but you also get longer delay times and the pedal is slightly more transparent when bypassed. The memory man can put chorus or vibrato on the delay too though which is a pretty cool feature.

I'm not convinced that the maxon is true bypass with that standard intermittent switch on it. In fact Keeley told me that it was impossible to make it truly "true bypass" with that switch. The signal still has to go thru the circuit board even if it doesn't go thru a buffering circuit. The keeley installs a new triple throw switch in the Ibanez ad9 so its really true bypass. Its nice to have the signal go thru only the switch and wire when bypassed. To my ear there is a difference. The captain coconut which is a great pedal is "true bypass" but the signal still goes thru a pc board and relays when bypassed and to my ears it definitely affects the signal. It made the sound slightly more brittle. IMHO, true bypass is the signal only going thru switch and wire.

Those true bypass loop boxes and strips are so easy to make. Its a waste to buy one. I hate building pedals too.

Good point! I actually use a loop box for a couple effects.
