Bassman PT Getting Hot..Is That OK?

Post by Hazy » Sat Apr 08, 2006 8:26 am

I was checking for what I think is a short on the board as the power/volume level cuts high/low/high/low for "no" reason, especially with that little "love tap" on the top of the cabinet, when I noticed that the PT was pretty warm. It's wasn't too hot to touch and it didn't seem to get any hotter; but, it was pretty warm. I've never noticed this before.

Is this normal? I wasn't running the amp hard. Also, what are the signs of a PT going bad? Do they slip off slowly or is it a sudden decent into the abyss?

Like I said above, I seem to have a bad connection because of the way the volume cuts in and out...or, could I have another problem. :?

Thanks,

Hazy

Maybe it's just working harder overcoming whatever problem is causing the volume drops......get those fixed and see if it still gets warmer than you think it should.

I'm a Fender freak......when the 6l6's start to go they will do that loud soft
cracklin thing. Try changing them, my favorities are 6l6 GE's .Groove tube
has reissues but I'd try e-bay first for originals.

OK. Flames, you're right. I need to find the high/low problem and then check the PT.

Tg, I have another set of tubes that I can throw in. It doesn't seem like a output tube problem :? ; but, I've been wrong before...really.

I'm going to put my '66 and '67 side by side and see if there's a power or volume difference. The '67 is OK and I'm getting a bit confused. :?
