LP Style: Tonality Problems

Post by wdelaney72 » Wed Mar 01, 2006 2:26 pm

Just wondering if anyone else who plays a LP style guitar has had intonation problems with their 3rd string (G). It appears that when bent, this string is getting caught in the nut and therefore goes out of tune. One person recommended I squirt a tad of WD40 so that the string lubricates. While this has helped the situation, I'd like to consider a more permanent solution. I've considered the following:
1) Getting a new nut - a graphite one
2) Adding a string retainer to the 3rd string
3) Both options 1 & 2.

The guitar is a Washburn WI66 Pro. Outside of this, I absolutely love the sound and feel of this guitar.

if you are sure it is catching in the nut, you may be able to file the nut, just a tad, on the G String slot and free it up...

nice axe.

one might argue that the nut isnt cut right - try a pencil in the groove. it should stop sticking and if it still sticks the nut just may need to be cut right.

Yeah, I'd definitely rub a pencil on the nut slot, as well as a bit on the saddle while I was at it. Do 'em all, pencils are pretty cheap. A so-so nut slot can be a pain. You can order a nut file cheap enough, but if you're not terribly inclined, it shouldn't cost too much to have it done by a pro.

You can also take some 1000 grit wet/dry and smooth it out a bit, that helped mine. But for sure use the pencil lead it acts like a lubricant.
