1978 2203 pots in order

Post by timmy2tone » Wed May 08, 2013 12:21 pm

I have a 1978 2203 Superlead and my bass pot took a dump. I text Velvet George and he told me what the ohm spec was and I happened to have one. Replaced it and problem solved and sounded awesome again. Well now my treble pot is acting up. I figured screw it, I want to replace them all!!!
Can I get someone to tell me the ohm spec from left to right, (pre., bass, middle, treble, volume, master volume)
Thanks in advance,

Logarithmic, or audio taper. Pretty important with the volume controls, or it will come in with a BIG jump and not be very controllable at the low end of the scale.

I know plenty of places better for the UK...

If you get confused by bushing lengths/sizes/threads/shaft types etc. you might find it easier ordering from Valvestorm.

Me too. Cheap, cheerful, and do the job well. I put PEC's in my main workhorse, but I'm just not sure they were worth the extra. Maybe 30 years down the line I may appreciate the lack of required pot maintenance, but I just can't help but feel I'm missing something that I had before I put the PEC's in.

Well I got the new pots in and it sounds a whole lot better. But to me it still sounds very high endish. Are these amps always this trebly? I have the bass dimed, the mid about 11 o'clock and the treble at about 9 o'clock.
Velvet George converted this amp from 6550's to EL 34's for me. I like the more vintage sound. That's all that's been done to the amp other than the power chord.

Yep, that's why I prefer the 1959 and 1987. To slightly tame the high end dime the gain knob, or remove the bypass cap :what:

This was discussed in a thread a while back...one you participated in.

A lot of times I get the mindset that, "if it costs more, it must be better" not so, it seems. Especially when dealing with tone. There is a lot of "mojo" added to tone by the inherent inefficeinces of some components. The trick is deciding which components provide mojo and which provide headaches.

Yes they are to a degree, even worse with 6550's, but it is unusual for you to have to dime the bass. :?

I wonder if something might be a bit tired...

If you do decide to mod for more bass, DON'T put it in the preamp, simply add a .0047uF capacitor in series within the negative feedback loop. Or lower if that's not enough for you.

Man that's going back some. Actually I've gone back to using certain Alpha's in guitars too. Especially the push/pull switching mini log pots. Occasionally the taper isn't good enough and it ends up in the bin, but at the price, it's all good.
