Splawns
I've heard clips of the Splawn amps and heard a lot of good comments on them. I agree with most people that they sound good, yet I can't understand why people rave about how they get such a good brown sound? To my ears on all the clips I've heard, it doesn't sound that brown, it sounds too gainy, compressed and modern - even on the clip from the EVH tribute band, where the guitarist is using pretty much ever other piece of gear needed to get that sound. Am I the only one who thinks this?

I've heard two of these one was a modded 1987 and the other was a modded 1959. I agree with you regarding the gain saturation being two harsh and modern for the "brown" sound. They did do the high gain thing well and were both channel switching so you could do the more stock 87/59 vibe to them. I once even concidered sending my amp to get the same mod.
I think that Splawns would be good as a plug and play amp that can get you in the area of the brown sound much like a 5150 can but more for those who shy away from the Peavey brand name and look as the Splawns have a more Marshally look to them.

Call me a snob, but I had one on order, and cancelled after I found out that it was PCB. Around the same time I found this place, and built my first kit. I'm so glad I did.
For the same price, I was able to build a PTP amp with NOS Caps and Tubes, and MM Trannys. Plus I learned a skill.
Talk about a rewarding experience.
To Splawns credit, he refunded my order.
It was back ordered 4 weeks anyways.

I have a Splawn Pro Mod with JJ-KT88's in it and 3 JJ-ECC83's and I have to say...for those who are looking for a more modern sounding amp that can do later EVH stuff like BALANCE, VH-III etc. it is a perfect amp for that later EVH tone. The Pro Mod sounds like a Soldano SLO-100 with a sweeter gain, not as thick as the SLO, but sweeter and just as quiet. The KT-88's really do that particular amp justice. Huge low end when needed, a clearer tone (nothing like a 5150 piece of junk) and enough gain to do alot more. The amp does sound a little sterile on the clean channel but wow, maybe its my Scumbag G12H-75's & 55's in my MAW 4x12 that make it sound good but I have tried it with other 4x12's and it just screams compared to other amps in that price range. You guys will think I am nuts but if you really crank the Master Volume into a THD Hotplate & have a warm sounding guitar with a 8-9k pickup, you can get a decent, early VH sound.
