Sound City Amps

Post by Billy Batz » Sun Jul 31, 2005 5:31 pm

Anyone familiar with these? Any info and opinions you can give me on em? Im just curcious because I know next to nothing about these amps accept they have the partridge trannys since Dave Reeves worked for SC for a while right? But seeing that Jimmy used one I got a bit curious. Theyre pretty cheap used.

I don't know much either, but I've kinda been keeping an eye out for one off and on too. They're cheaper than Marshall or HiWatt, although I don't think I'd say they're cheap.......

Have heard alot about them second hand.....supposed to be very close to the hiwatt vibe (expected with Reeves involved).

Great amps, but very hard to find schematics/parts for (so I've been told)
Let's get going, 'cause there's too much music, too little time!!!!

They have a bunch of Sound City schematics over at Schematic Heaven. I don't know enough about these amps to even know which one would be the model to look at picking up.

i think they are generally looked upon as poor mans hiwatts. i had one for a while as they are so cheap, didnt keep it long (the vintage tubes in there were worth more than the amp, nice bonus). some have active eqs which make them noisy. bulky, weigh a f@**ing ton aswell.

Just giving it some thought. Ive been thinking of getting a hiwatt for a long time. Im worried their price is going to shoot through the roof though.

I thought HiWatts were already through the roof. I downloaded some schems to ponder building one. But I'd have to custom-order the chassis, the layout is totally different from a 100-watt Marshall.

There's someone in Dublin selling a Sound City 120 watt at the moment. It's going quite cheap, so I'm thinking I'll at least try it out and see what it's like.

Flames if you're building one, I've got an all original (except for the caps and toobs) '76 DR103 4 holer that sounds absolutely killer that I'd be glad to photograph any way you might need. The only correct part you might not be able to find is a 16x32 filter cap. When I recapped, I just used a 32x32.

A guy over on PP just built himself a CP103 from Mark Huss's diagrams. He might be able to tell you where he got his chassis.

If you make a few board mods, change the filtering and get those same trannys you could convert a marshall build to a 103

But I always wonder if it would come out the same, since the chassis layout is so different. Maybe that last one-half of a percent........

Months ago I came across a good deal on a SC OT and was thinking about getting it to use for my '69 clone.

I asked some people at the PP what they thought and they strongly warned me against it if I wanted anything near a Marshall sound.

I only post this because I can only assume the opposite would be true as well.....
