A friend of mine actually bought that SC 120 in the end. I revalved and biased it last night. Active EQ is really... different... feeling. It also kinda makes it more like an MV. I think I like it. The tone is not muck anyway, though I've yet to play it at much volume.
I'm really interested to record and compare with the SL and the AC30.
Amp cost €250-300ish, revalve was about €120. Given that you couldn't even get an AVT head for that much around these parts, I'm impressed.

A friend of mine had a sound city 50+. It was noisy because of the acitve EQ, but it had a great and unique sound. I think he got it for about $300 in 2003.

i have several Sound City amps--- i'm not a big fan of the active eq Mk4 preamp models, although i have one 120 Tour Series w/ master vol and switchable "Dirty" channel that works well, and it's active-- i've redone the Dirty channel along JCM 800 lines-- the older Mk1, Mk2, Mk3 amps with passive preamps sound much better, most people say--- a popular mod for the Mk4 120's is to replace the entire preamp with another design-- Hiwatt and Plexi seem to be most popular (for good reason)--- build quality on Sound City's varies from one amp to another but isn't up to Hiwatt standards in any case--- one of my favorite amps is my white late '60s L 100 half stack-- it's the Mk3 preamp and the amp was modded by the importer (one of a pair) for the orig owner when he had Warner Brothers $$$ for a short time-- the pair of halfstacks was sitting in a garage for @30 yrs and i ended up with one of them and i rebuilt it---- here's some pics--

talk to terry kilgore about this amp - in our phone conversation he mentioned more than once that he has sound city amps that would eat marshalls for lunch

Terry knows about my amp because i bought it from him in orig condition--- the Marshall eater he talks about is this one's twin--- the other white L 100 of the pair--- his was rebuilt/restored to stock specs but i kept the PPIMV and gain mods in mine--- i'd like to A/B them to compare but it's a long way to LA from TX---- i serviced/retubed a '74 100 watt Metal Panel Marshall recently, i do very few outside repairs, and it is probably the most impressive amp i've ever played in it's own way--- the sweetness of tone in this thing blew away everybody who played it until the owner came up with the $$$ for the repair--- then he called me a few days later asking if he could pull two output tubes, "i didn't know it would be so loud"-

-he paid $1400 at GC for an amp that barely worked and then died and then complains when it's restored to what it should be--- this is why i usually don't do outside repairs---- he should have bought a DSL 50 and it would have better suited his needs...........gldtp99

They are a modding mans paradise. The chassis can accomodate about any circuit and those Partriges although a bit hi-fi are pretty close to indestructable.
